Gurukulam Curriculum

In Gurukulam, We follow a three-language formula, whereby each student learns Samskritam, mother tongue and English.  Maths and Social studies will be taught at all levels. Bharateeya samskriti will be taught both informally and formally.

Bharateeya shikshanam for Bharateeya students…

In Agastya Gurukulam where we teach all subjects like mathematics, itihasa, science and Grammar, yoga and much more in samskritam.  These subjects are taught in an applied form also from its primary source in its original format with its linguistic beauty & rasa intact.

Samskritam

Students are taught speaking, writing and reading Samskritam. Simultaneously, children have Shastra based teaching of the Amarakosha, Ashtadhyayi, Dhatu Pata, Sabda and Dhatu forms. They are taught introductory Sahitya by authors like Bhartruhari and select verses from Kalidasa and other poets.  As children gradually gain proficiency in the subject, they start to understand and explain meanings of simple shlokas. Eventually they are expected to be fluent enough to read and understand works like the Ramayana, Bhagavadgita and so on.

Samskritam Language opens the door to a vast treasure of knowledge.   Their minds will open up to ways of learning and analysis like never before.

Having lived through thousands of years of our civilization, Samskritam beholds the key to our Indian knowledge like non other.  Learning all other applied subjects in immersive manner via samskritam brings with it multiple advantages.

Mathematics

Ancient Mathematics, Lilavati, Bhaskaracharya, PANini

Indian mathematics travelled to Arabia and eventually ended up with a lag of a few centuries and some information loss in transit, in Europe – which finally gave rise to the mathematical teaching currently followed by schools. We teach Mathematics using those very original Shastric texts. The specialty of these sources is that they teach applied mathematics rather than dry theory. This immediately stokes a learner’s interest and motivates learning. They also provide multiple ways of solving a problem at every operation. Some of the Shastric books used are Lilavati, Aryabhatiyam and works of BrahmaGupta. Students will also be assigned work using our own worksheets.

Social Studies

It is widely known that the History taught currently in Indian schools is a version distorted through a colonial lens to support a particular narrative.

This justifies colonial aggression, and vastly downplays the achievements of the Bharateeya civilization.

Therefore, there is a need for a revamped History that accurately portrays historical events, and recognizes that Bharateeya civilization and culture are an unbroken continuum that go back at least 11,000 years.

We attempt to teach Bharateeya history emphasizing this continuum, and victories that sustained this continuum. We focus on key personalities and events from Vedic times to modern history. Many important historical personalities that are completely ignored by colonial textbooks are covered – King Lalitaditya, Bhoja the PolyMath Warrior, Rani Velu Nachiyar who fought the first war against British colonization and so on. Similarly, key events that are typically ignored by textbooks, such as the activities of the Indian National Army, its prosecution for war crimes and the mutiny of the British Indian armed forces in the lead up to independence, will be included.

In Geography, students study the Integral unity of Bharata from Kashmir to Kanyakumari through sacred geography. Religious festivals that take on different names and practices in different parts, like Panchayatan, are common across India. Interestingly, the educational curriculum appeared to be maintained at a fairly uniform level across the country in ancient India. The medium of instruction will be Samskritam.

Second Language

At the present time, the school offers several second languages, including Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Gujarati.  We are also considering Marathi for the 2023-24 onwards.

The number of offerings may expand as the need arises. We use standard curricula put out by various educational boards, modified for our requirements.

Electives

Yoga and Kalaripayattu are currently mandatory for all students. Elective subjects such as the following  are offered at appropriate levels when logistics permit.

We attempt to bring in experts in relevant fields to speak to and inspire the children from time to time.
